Is Coconut Oil Good for You?
Believe it or not, I always get asked “Is coconut oil good for you” which is a funny question to ask someone who runs a blog solely based on the numerous benefits of coconut oil. The short answer is yes, coconut oil is very good for you, and there’s tons of different benefits, ranging from ingesting the coconut oil with meals or putting it on your skin, each one more beneficial than the last.
Let’s talk about eating coconut oil first. Obviously you shouldn’t just dip a spoon into the coconut oil jar and eat it like that way, unless you’re into that, but most people aren’t. If you use coconut oil as a substitute for vegetable or olive oil you will start to reap the benefits, including the zero amount of trans and hydrogenated fats. Those are the bad fats, but it’s also got a higher level of good fats (and yes, some fats are good for you). Not to mention that if your bowel movements are few are far between, coconut oil regulates your bowels.
Other internal benefits of coconut oil include improvement of thyroid health, which can reduce the amount of water you retain, resulting in weight loss. This happens because coconut oil acts as an energy source for your body, improving the health of your thyroid hormones. Can it get any better than that?
Among the internal benefits, coconut oil is also used as en external skin cream and hair treatment because of its numerous benefits. It is used on the skin to reduce acne, improve skin health, and as a lotion to nurture and hydrate skin. If you aren’t already using it on your skin, try to replace your current lotion or skin cream with coconut oil for a week or two and see if you notice a difference. Just a warning, it will start off as oily on your skin, but it should be absorbed and hydrate your skin within just a few minutes. It’s a little weird going from putting coconut oil in your meals to then putting on your skin, but it’s worth it, trust me!
Coconut oil is also very good for your hair because it is hydrophobic, which means that it repels water. When you add a hydrophobic substance to your hair it helps to reduce the penetration of water into your hair, which would normally cause your hair to become weak and damaged. It is best used as a pre-wash, meaning you should put it into your hair before you get it wet because that will prevent it from retaining water.
As you can tell, coconut oil is good for you, both used internally and externally. It includes good fats and can improve your bowel movements, while using it externally can improve your skin and hair health. But don’t take my word for it, go ahead and try it in a few various ways and see how you like it. I hope I answered your question, “Is coconut oil good for you?”
